Sunar Sugiyou

Trained in graphic design at St Patrick’s Art Centre (now known as LaSalle College of the Arts) from 1985-87, I continued to pursue my childhood interest in art by drawing and painting.

“One of my main beliefs is how harmony and balance in nature come in pairs – yin and yang, good and evil, rough and smooth, black and white, birth and death. The cycle of life ultimately returns us to the cosmos and renders all equal – an eventuality that, I as an artist, calls for understanding and peace in this world. It is with this philosophy that i hopes we can live life with heart and beauty, to create a ”masterpiece’ we can be proud of. I utilises a wide variety of media, including acrylic, mixed media collage assemblages, and sculptures

The commonplace and ordinary astounds me when it sometimes reveals its cloaked charm. That, I experiment with diverse mediums: acrylic, ink, thread, fabric and found objects, among others. Since the early 1990s, I have traversed the abstract, which with the passing years has proven succinct in expressing my subjects and exploring possiblities, how my art making may evolve, gradually incorporating Chinese ink style brush techniques.(mimicking by using black ink ,wet, dry brush strokes & teqniques )

I try to create a world that exists parallel to the one we see and feel. Some of them have a poem origin There is more delicacy and dynamism of lines in the early works. Later for me, as an artist, whom fond of poems is impossible to ignore. This beauty may present itself as the rising morning light, the creatures of our Earth—oblivious to my gaze, the shifting shadows of dusk, and even the devastating forces of nature: the everyday scenes that remind me remarkably of our place in the universe. I pay tribute to the Earth’s and life.
To paint, for me, is to portray the myriad faces of the world, works are more ponderous yet no less lively. My ink works are comparatively restful, muted, yet retaining an almost impressionistic vigor. Although painting for me is mostly abstract and symbolic, I explore my representation side via occasional sculptures and clay forms Shaping clay reminds me of our fragility and our psyches in symbiosis. When I choreograph pigments on blank slates, understanding and peace in this world.

“Make your life a painting and paint it without a brush.” ~ Sunar Sugiyou
